“Beware Of The Man Who Offers You A Shirt, But Doesn’t Have A Shirt.”
This African saying declares that it is common sense to be cautious when getting a deal from someone who does not represent or personify the part that they purport to play. As we know, there is no end to con games. They have become a way of life for many whose greed surpass their need. The more passwords, encryption, and technology thrown at our safety, security, and convenience, the more our living and particulars seem to be breachable.
Be vigilant and judicious, don’t always expect to get a lump sum of goodies for pennies. Remember that nowadays’ sales pitches originate from the minds of multiple psychological, technological, social, marketing, artistic etc. specialists and researchers, all to get into your home, pocketbook, mind, body etc.
This quip is closely related to the sayings — “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” “Set a whale to catch a Sprat,” and “The higher the monkey climbs the more he is exposed.”
Cultural Reference: Gregory Isaacs (song) – “No Speech No Language.” Lee Scratch Perry “Big Neck Police” (Where he inversely and rightly refers to “Set a Sprat to catch a whale”)
