The Amistad Center of Art & Culture Event to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop

The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, will hold Gardens and Galleries: Hip Hop at 50 to celebrate the widespread local, national and international influences for Hip Hop in American culture for half a century. The first- time event will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 5p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at 600 Main Street in Hartford.

The celebration is one of many across the United States held this year to pay tribute to the vibrant culture of Hip Hop and its indelible mark on various aspects of social culture including visual art, music, artistic expression, and fashion.

Gardens & Galleries: Hop Hip at 50 will showcase a series of live performances in the museum. The event is being hosted by Khaiim Kelly, named ‘First Hip Hop Troubadour of an American City’, by the City of Hartford in 2021. Performances will include presentations and special guest appearances by Hip Hop pioneers and contemporary artists. Poetry performances, a fashion show, hands-on activities, and music by disc jockeys will also be featured. Images from The Amistad Center for Art & Culture’s collection depicting the history of Hip Hop will be displayed.

This event is for individuals over the age of 21. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and Cash-Bar will be available. Get ready to groove, appreciate, and be inspired! The cost of tickets is $25 and may be purchased on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/gardens-galleries-hiphop-at-50-tickets.
