At Northend Agent’s, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.
To begin, we’re celebrating 50 years! It is an honor to lead the institution my father, John Allen, created. Our commitment to providing a safe and positive space for black and brown people to see and celebrate themselves is stronger than ever. We’re also grateful to you, our community, who continue to champion our work.
Though our hearts are full, they are also tired and a bit broken.
As the only women- and black-owned newsroom in Connecticut, we are exhausted. For five decades — and in the face of headwinds most other newsrooms do not experience — the Allen family has poured into the landscape of black media and communities across the state. The incoming federal government administration is an intense blow to newsrooms like ours: a dagger in the ideologies of hope and collective communities working together. Some businesses and individuals are already calling quits. Not at Northend Agent’s. We must and will show up, share news with our readers, and hold people accountable.
As we navigate unknown landscapes in the years to come, I ask each of you to also show up for us, and for newsrooms like ours. Show up at the newsstands, on social media, and on our website, become a contributing writer, share our content, subscribe to our newsletter, and more than anything, when you see us, encourage us. We are in service to this work and will remain in service to create safe spaces for black and brown people to be heard, held, and healed. There is always space for you at Northend Agent’s.
