Pollution Is Terrifying! Climate Walk: Sierra Club To Walk In Support Of Clean Energy For Hartford’s Capitol Area System

CT NEWS
On Saturday, October 24, Sierra Club Connecticut will host a two mile Pollution is Terrifying! Climate Walk around the Capitol Area System and each of the Hartford-area buildings the plant heats and cools including: Legislative Office Building; State Office Building; CT Education Association; Bushnell Theater. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes for the Halloween-themed walk. Sierra Club CT and partners will follow-up the walk with a Press Conference on Connecticut’s High Asthma Rates on Monday, October 26.

A former co-generation power plant purchased by the State of Connecticut in 2022, the Capitol Area System requires extensive repair in order to continue providing heating and cooling to state and private buildings along its two mile loop, including the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Appellate Court.

The Capitol Area System currently runs on methane gas to heat and cool the over a dozen buildings. Sierra Club is urging the State of Connecticut to lead by example and commit to a fossil fuel free, 100 percent renewable solution.

Saturday morning’s walk will begin and end at the Capitol Area System plant at 490 Capitol Avenue. Monday morning’s press conference will be held inside the Legislative Office Building, one of a dozen buildings heated and cooled by the Capitol Area System.
