Alibis: The Silent Dream Killers

By Petra-Ann Brown, Brown Financial Services

One of the most dangerous statements we can make is:

“If only I…”

It may seem innocent, but that phase has kept far too many of us stuck in a loop of regret, blame, and inaction.

“If only I had money…”

“If only I had a better job…”

“If only I was younger…”

“If only I had time…”

“If only I knew where to start…”

Sound familiar?

When Excuses Masquerade as Reasons

Let’s be honest, we’ve all said it at some point. But staying there? That’s where the danger lies. “If only” becomes the perfect alibi. A built-in excuse for why you didn’t move forward, why you didn’t try again, or why you’re still in the same place year after year.

But what if instead of listing all the reasons we can’t succeed…

We started finding just one reason why we must?

Because here’s the truth:

Your “if onlys” aren’t facts.

They’re often fear wearing a mask.

Environment matters: Watch Who’s in Your Circle

I once heard someone say, “if you hang around nine broker people, you’ll be the tenth.”

It’s not just about money, it’s about mindset.

Negativity and excuses are contagious. If your environment is filled with people who always complain, never take responsibility, and rarely pursue growth, you’ll start to reflect that. Or as my mother used to say, “Show me your friends, and I’ll tell you who you are”

So be careful who you give access to your spirit. Protect your energy, especially when you’re trying to grow.

Everything Starts in the mind

Before you can rewrite your financial story, you must first rewrite your mindset

Everything starts with a thought.

What you believe about yourself, your worth, your future, your ability to change will shape your reality. Your financial transformation begins not with a spreadsheet, but with a shift in thinking.

If you believe you’re “bad with money” you’ll avoid facing your finances.

If you believe you’ll “never get ahead” you’ll live like it.

If you believe change is possible? You’ll take the first step.

But let’s Be Real – This Isn’t Easy

Guarding your mind is hard when you’re surrounded by noise. Social media. Friends with different goals. Family pressure. Fear of failure. And yes, the heaviness of past mistakes.

But here’s the beautiful part:

You don’t have to do it all at once.

You just have to start with a choice.

Choose to shift your focus from excuses to action.

Choose to believe something new.

Choose to say: “Even if I don’t have all the answers, I’m still going to try.”

Final Thought: The story Isn’t over

Don’t let “if only” become the end of your story

You are not stuck.

You are not too late.

You are not your past.

You are capable.

You are learning.

You are rising.

Let’s Rewrite the Story Together

If you’re ready to move from “if only” to “What’s next? I’m here to help. Let’s build a new narrative, one action at a time. Visit BrownFinancialSolutions.com for additional resources.

Start small. Start now. But start.
